Product Description
As one of the emerging economies in ASEAN, Indonesia has been playing more important roles in the societal development in Southeast Asia in various fronts. From economics to technological progress, from politics to cultural dynamics, Indonesia has been a main reference in the region. In hindsight, such pivotal position of Indonesia in SEA region could have been made possible by the advancement of the role of science in those areas. As a result, potentials and development in science have been seen to be deeply influencing developments in other sectors. More than often, various civic engagements in Indonesia involve academic works, e.g. in policy making processes, business strategies, or civil society activism. In other words, it is the academic discourse, not just applied science and technology, which may have been one of the most important drivers for the dynamics of societal changes and developments in the country Nevertheless, there has been not much academic works attempting to map the contribution of scientific discourse in the Indonesian development. This edited collection is one of the current endeavours, initiated during the TIIMI (Indonesian Student International Scientific Conference) 2010 Conference organised by Indonesian Students Association in the UK. The conference aims to contribute scientific perspective to the recent development of sciences in Indonesia from wide-ranging aspects of technology, social and culture, politics, and economics. Organised since 2000, the TIIMI Conference 2010 focuses on science, development, and sustainability in Indonesia. With such a theme, the conference presents and discusses various ways in which a number of scientific works have been developed and applied and in turn conveys research narratives from an Indonesian perspective. With its growing popularity and significance as a research perspective, sustainability is deemed as important as a lens to critically evaluate the development of science and technology and its impact in Indonesia. Here, we compile the best eight papers presented and discussed during the TIIMI 2010 Conference as an edited book, which we expect to be a significant scientific contribution. Moreover, this collection serves as an academic channel for young, early career Indonesian scholars, both studying outside the country and those working in Indonesian institutions. The publication of this edited collection is considered a breakthrough and novel initiative of the PPI-UK, answering the growing needs of Indonesian academic community for the provision of more informative and scientific papers in a relatively more advanced scheme. As editors, we realise that the publication of this collection would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of all colleagues and friends who provided stimulating thoughts, discussion and help. This collection represents intellectual commitments and involvements of Indonesian scholars, to whom we dedicate this work. We are also aware that a number of sponsorships have helped realise the publication of this collection --such as the Indonesian Embassy in London, BKPM, Bank Indonesia, the British Council, METI, Ihsan, Tinamitra Mandiri, Fatman inc and Scientifica Books Ltd. We are also grateful and deeply appreciate the works of the TIIMI 2010
